How to measure – Reveal or Face Fit?

Before you can measure for your estimate you need to figure out where the shutter is going to fit. If you can fit it within the reveal this is always the first choice. The reveal is the step back between the face of the wall in a room and the window. You will need a minimum of 65mm to fit within the reveal. When looking for the 65mm measurement you will need to watchout for protrusions / obstructions such as handles, locks keys, parts of the window frame, anything that sits forward of the glass. Be especially aware of sliding windows as the handles slide across the window.

In the example pic to the left you can see the reveal measures over 90mm.

Don’t forget, we are going to conduct a final measure and we guarantee your shutters will fit. You are simply creating an estimate.

if it is a case of a key or lock then simply add a frame cut-out, if it is not needed then we will remove it the order and amend the final quote.

Follow these steps to ensure an accurate price for your new shutters:

The picture shows a window with a deep enough reveal fir a reveal fit, you are looking for a minimum of 65mm reveal to fit the shutters inside the reveal.

What is a reveal? A window reveal refers to the interior space surrounding a window frame. It includes the vertical and horizontal surfaces that form the recess in which the window is set. The reveal can be thought of as the area between the window frame and the wall, often visible from inside the room.

Bifold and Sliding must only be measured as Face Fit.

Window Locks & Frame Cutouts

We are often asked about window locks, their keys and even handles. Sometimes a frame cut-out is required so that a handle can turn, a window lock can operate or key can be removed . Frame cut-outs can be on the left, right, top or bottom frames most commonly but they can be applied to any piece of frame as required. The pictures below show a frame cut-out that allows the removal of a key, in most cases it is good to allow a little more space than you think. Frame cut-outs can be different sizes and in different locations to suit the purpose.

In this case the back of the frame has been removed to allow key access to the window lock.

As you can see the key can still easily be fitted into this window lock, the cut-out also provides more room to operate the key and lock.
